Exploring Bingham Falls via the Mill Trail with Dela

Image
The last time I explored Bingham Falls from the Mill Trail I had a different baby on my back. You can check out those cute photos of Catalina here . It was shortly after we moved here and we were trying to explore all the cool spots nearby.     The Mill Trail is a lesser known hike to get to Bingham Falls. It is up near the notch, here in Stowe. The trail starts out high above the river through a beautiful forest. Some well constructed bridges help you cover some distance, before you are able to descend down closer to the river. The falls are actually a series of cascades that have carved a deep, narrow gorge through the rocks. It has formed plunge pools below each cascade.     This time around I had Dela in the backpack. Once we made it down to the river and the falls I took some long exposure shots with my iPhone. Someone showed me a trick of taking a photo of a waterfall in live view mode, then hitting 'long exposure' on the drop down menu. It tur...

Hidden Gems Around the Corner: Vermont

Image
Snow at Stowe Neka in the wildflowers The first sprinkling of snow on top of the mountains brings an air of excitement here in Vermont. It is time to dust off those skis and snowboards. For me that is a lot of dust. It has been about 7 years since I last snowboarded so I'm hoping that all these surf sessions pay off as a kind of cross training.   And with the excitement of spending a bit more time here in Vermont I wanted to do a bit of exploring. Just across from an old covered bridge that I photographed earlier this week I found a trail that supposedly followed the river to a couple of waterfalls. I thought I would see if I could photograph them with a bit of the waning fall colors before the snow season took over. Brewster River Lower Falls   The trail led to many other trails which was a cool surprise since it was right around the corner from Heidi's family place. Its called the Brewster River Gorge, or as some locals call it the lower and upper falls...

Igazu Falls, Exploring the Argentina Side

Image
Iguazu Pictures for Sale   Exploring Iguazu Falls, Argentina    Argentina and Brazil share a border at one of the new seven wonders of the world, Iguazu Waterfall. I have to admit that I was not prepared for the amount of waterfalls, how much water was moving, and how close the boardwalks would put you to the heart of the action. For a photographer you have so many different angles to shoot, from below the falls, next to the falls, to standing feet above the falls looking over the Devil's Tongue itself. Since the falls are located in a forested area you also have a chance to see some wildlife like cuatis and capuchin monkeys. There are lots of butterflies flittering about as well as some colorful birds. Viewing platform on the Brazil side Visitors about to get wet  Heidi and I walked outside to catch a  local bus in front of our hotel (Marco Polo Suites), which would take us right to the cataracts for 65 pesos each (about $4 each). However ...

First Full Moon of 2015

Image
Tidepools and Offshore islands lit up by the full moon Makapu'u Beach A couple of days ago some friends and I met up at the eastern most point on the island to view the first full moon of the year 2015. The colors of the setting sun were a nice foreshadowing of the beauty to come with the moon rise.  At first we were in the wrong spot, as the one cliff in between us and the ocean was blocking the initial rise. But after some quick moves down to the shoreline we were greeted with an amazing view. From Makapu'u beach we could see the full moon rising from the ocean towards some low lying clouds. It was so bright that everything, including colors were still visible along the shoreline. A couple of offshore islands and nearby tidepools aided in capturing some memorable long exposure images. Welcome 2015. Full moon rising over the Pacific

Twin Falls at Dusk All To Myself

Image
Reflection of Twin Falls, Maui Sometimes when you live in a place like Maui finding inspiration for pictures can be quite easy. Twin Falls at dusk, a perfect time to have it all to yourself. I enjoyed playing with long exposures with the fading light. This also happened to be the calmest and lowest water level I have ever seen here which gave the pool a mirror like quality casting not only the reflection of the twin water falls but also giving a transparent quality not often seen here.

Sunset Long Exposures with Heidi and Mom

Image
Me and my mom Walking on water These pictures were taken with my Canon Rebel T4i with a multi-second shutter speed just after sunset. The shoreline of Maui boast endless opportunities for artistic and creative photos. It is easy to see why so many photographers wait for the magic hours around sunrise and sunset to do most of their work. I do love Hawaii. Heidi and me taking in the after glow.

Shoreline Magic

Image
A short walk away from where I live is a wonderful place for a photographer. It is where the ocean meets the shoreline. Here on Maui you can find tall cliffs made out of old lava flows, sandy beaches in black, white, and red, and of course the idyllic palm trees. Around sunset this coastal setting is perfect for practicing long exposures. This is when you keep the shutter on the camera open for longer than normal to catch things that the eye can't see. The ebb and flow of water has a misty character that looks almost ethereal when caught over time.
