Kayaking in Savannah with Mom

Image
Gliding through the marsh grass at high tide, following the winding path of the creeks, passing ancient mounds of disposed oysters, and watching incredible birdlife are just some of the reason I love kayaking around Savannah's waterways.    On this epic three hour paddle, my mom and I started at Butterbean beach and made it all the way to the Isle of Hope causeway before making the turn and riding the current back out around Wormsloe Plantation. Ospreys, kingfishers, and terns dove into the water around us and wood storks circled high above. The weather in October is downright pleasant for this kind of adventure. Chalk another fun one into the memory books.

Kawai Nui Marsh Hike

Rocky outcropping in Kawai Nui Marsh    The Kawai Nui marsh is the largest wetlands in Hawaii at a little over 800 acres. I've seen people walking far out through the marsh over a levy but I've never stopped to really search for the trail head. Heidi and I searched for a bit and found a trail leading to this big, lava rock outcropping. It provided a great view over the marsh and even a little trail down to a fresh water pool, but no access deeper into the marsh. Secret Swimming Hole   After admiring some of the beautiful flowers growing around the trail we got some advice on where to find the trail to the levy. Our local advice proved much better than our smart phones so we were soon on the path leading out into the Kawai Nui marsh. Heidi checking out the levy Mountains and Marsh   It is always interesting hiking through a part of the islands that is so unique. There are so many different environments here from rainforest, to desert, to wetland...

When in Savannah...

View from Isle of Hope Tybee's famous lighthouse   When in Savannah you should eat some good local seafood. But don't stop there. When I'm in Savannah I visit family, soak in the atmosphere of Tybee, go swimming in a marsh, wakeboard with friends, take early morning walks along bluff drive, go searching for wildlife, wrangle an alligator or two, and maybe, just maybe, I would find a ghost among the old buildings of historic downtown. My old stomping ground, Isle of Hope marshes Home of the mighty fiddler crabs Savannah wildlife around every corner View from the rooftop bar, Bohemian   I only had three days to show Heidi around my hometown and just a mere week myself, so this trip to Savannah was packed full. I was able to include a lot of my favorites from famous Tamarack waffles, to catching gators, and wake boarding with Ed. I was also able to show Heidi some of the finer points of growing up in the South. We had some quality marsh time with wak...
