Kayaking the Scenic Back Bay of Cedar Bay, Alaska

Image
Epic Alaska kayaking. Glassy calm water, temperate rainforest, and snow capped peaks coming right down to the water. Wow. I wanted to show people just how good kayaking can be in some of these secret little bays and inlets in this part of Alaska. After a morning of exploring a glacier, I took them to a place called Cedar Bay, in the northern part of Prince William Sound. It is called 'Cedar Bay' because it is the northern and western-most place you can find Alaskan Yellow Cedar trees. One of my favorite parts of kayaking here, is that the big boat anchors in the outer bay, then you kayak through a shallow narrow part and enter a massive back bay, that you would never even know was there. There are waterfalls cascading down from snow capped mountains, a salmon stream, and little nooks and crannies to explore. The light colored granite rock and calm waters make the scene almost tropical when you look down. And it can be a great place for birds like bald eagles and mergansers. M...

Exploring Mears Glacier and Cedar Bay, Alaska

Jumping into Unakwik Inlet like... Today we explored a wondrous place called Unakwik Inlet here in Prince William Sound, Alaska. This was the epicenter of the 1964 Good Friday earthquake. It measured 9.2 on the richtor scale, making one side of the fjord raise up 12 feet while they other side sank down. Dead trees can still be seen along the inlet on our way up to Meares glacier at the end. Meares glacier is always an exciting one to explore, because it is advancing instead of retreating, like almost all the other glaciers in the world. If you get close enough you can see where the glacier is slow motion bulldozing its way through the rainforest, knocking trees over and pushing earth in front of it as it advances. We had some guests kayaking and others exploring by small boat, but I wanted to take people on a hike to the glacier face. This is one of the most unique hikes that I've found up here in Prince William Sound. We landed on an easy rocky beach. Then we crossed a small str...
