Back in Seattle for Spring B.C. Trips

Image
Ready for more of this $15 Mariners tix   I'm back for round 2 on the Safari Quest and year 4 for an UnCruise summer season. I'll be expedition leader aboard the 22 passengers luxury cruise yacht Safari Quest, doing weeklong trips on the British Columbia coast as well as the Inside Passage of Alaska. But first we need to unpack the boat which has been getting upgrades and maintenance over the winter at Fishermen's Terminal in Seattle. Plus I get to meet the new team! Although by this time I know pretty much everyone I'll be working with and quite a few are returning from working the Quest last season. Still gives us a good reason for bonding over baseball games and mini golf hijinx. Lala, Amie, Kerri, Dirk, Emily, Denee, Anastasia, Mark, and Myself The streets lit up with Spring colors Safari Quest in action   The weather is some of the best I've experienced here in the spring time. The wildflowers are just starting to bloom, as are the cher...

2017: A Year in Review

Image
From the southernmost country in the Americas to northernmost state, 2017 has been a busy year for me. Heidi and I started off the year by sipping Malbec in Argentina and finished with expecting our first baby. In between I have been running the expedition side of Alaska, British Columbia, and Hawaii adventure cruise trips with UnCruise. Sprinkle in a few trip to Savannah and Vermont, along with some private guiding tours, and you have a pretty packed 2017. This will be the 8th installment of my 'year in review' posts. My first being from 2010 which you can check out here . Perito Moreno Glacier Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse   Argentina So lets start from the beginning. Argentina was a wild ride. We started in Ushuaia , the southernmost city in South America. We cruised the Beagle Canal, hiked to amazing glaciers, went bird watching in Tierra del Fuego National Park, and started our Argentina adventure. The photographic opportunities were incredible, and you c...

The Mist of Fall in British Columbia

Image
Alone at the Skookumchuk Rapids Mist hugging the forest   It turns out Fall is a pretty amazing time to cruise through islands and fjords of British Columbia. Early morning clouds hang low enough to touch the mist rising from the water. It has a way of hiding thousand foot cliffs only to reveal them a few seconds later. The fog also hugs the forest, often moving in and around the huge old growth trees like some ethereal river. Paddle Boarding the Fjord    It is a rare opportunity for photography, as mist can often be a landscape photographers best friend. It add a mysterious effect, and always reminds me of ancient Chinese paintings where layers of mist would separate the foreground, middle, and background adding depth to a two dimensional scene. Ready to Deploy   The fog became so thick at one point during a kayak excursion this week that all sound was snuffed out except a ship's foghorn that would cut through the mist from far away every few...
