Downtown Savannah Photography Walk

City Market There is a lot of history in downtown Savannah. Built on a high bluff overlooking the Savannah river back in 1733, it is a perfect arena for a walking photo safari. The old cobblestone streets and brick buildings are coupled with tourist tasting salt water taffy and modern art galleries.   The city was organized around beautiful squares and a bustling waterfront. The squares still remain with beautiful oak trees, spanish moss, fountains, and statues. They are a great place to start. The fountain in Forsyth Park is perhaps the most photogenic. Walking north through the squares will bring you to the boutique and restaurant filled Broughton Street. Beyond that City Market looms as the place to go. Old town trolleys and pedestrians rule here along with one of my favorite pizza joints, Vinnie Van Go-Gos. Diners staying cool   This is where I started my photo walk. We tried to stick to the shade since the typical Savannah heat wave was beating down o...

Historic Honolulu

Aloha Tower   I had a guest on one of my tours the other day ask me if there were any photogenic buildings in Honolulu. I actually had to think about it a little. So I decided to do a bit of exploring around town and these are a couple examples of what I found.   The aloha tower has been standing watch over Honolulu's busy piers since 1926. It is kind of like our Statue of Liberty. It was the tallest building in Hawaii for four decades and has greeted hundreds of thousands of visitors to the islands as they first stepped foot onto Hawaiian soil. Now it houses two restaurants and is being remodeled as dorms for Hawaii Pacific University. St. Andrew's Cathedral    St. Andrews Church/Cathedral is a beautiful old church built in the Anglican tradition at the behest of then King Kamehameha IV and his wife Queen Emma. It is one of only four cathedrals in the Hawaiian Islands. Downtown Honolulu     Downtown Honolulu is currently evolving from a se...

Historic Downtown Savannah: A Photographic Walk

Image
Forsyth Park Fountain   I spent the first 18 years of my life growing up in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Savannah, Georgia. Although it took me moving away and traveling all over to realize what a gem Savannah truly is. I only had a short time for a quick visit with family and friends, but I managed to squeeze in a morning of playing tourist in Savannah's historic downtown district. These are some of my favorite pictures from that walk. Lafayette Square and St. John's Cathedral   I started with a relaxing cup of coffee at the Sentient Bean overlooking Forsyth Park. Afterwards I meandered into Forsyth Park, admiring all of the huge live oak trees covered in Spanish moss. I made sure to stop at the Forsyth Park fountain to take a few pictures. I tried for a while to wait until no people would be in the picture but finally gave up and took photos anyway. I actually like the photos even more with all the people relaxing on the park benc...

When in Savannah...

View from Isle of Hope Tybee's famous lighthouse   When in Savannah you should eat some good local seafood. But don't stop there. When I'm in Savannah I visit family, soak in the atmosphere of Tybee, go swimming in a marsh, wakeboard with friends, take early morning walks along bluff drive, go searching for wildlife, wrangle an alligator or two, and maybe, just maybe, I would find a ghost among the old buildings of historic downtown. My old stomping ground, Isle of Hope marshes Home of the mighty fiddler crabs Savannah wildlife around every corner View from the rooftop bar, Bohemian   I only had three days to show Heidi around my hometown and just a mere week myself, so this trip to Savannah was packed full. I was able to include a lot of my favorites from famous Tamarack waffles, to catching gators, and wake boarding with Ed. I was also able to show Heidi some of the finer points of growing up in the South. We had some quality marsh time with wak...
