2016: A Year in Review

Image
Here we are at the end of another incredible year. It has been filled with big travels, adventures, guiding, meet ups with family in foreign countries, and cool wildlife encounters above and below the water. Click through the different links for a look back at different posts and highlights from all the adventures. All the best pictures can be found at www.daimartamarack.com .    The year started out for me running exclusive guiding trips aboard the Safari Explorer in the Hawaiian Islands. The second half of January provided some ample off time for an incredible scuba diving trip to Indonesia with Heidi. We spent some quality time muck diving around the shipwreck of the UST Liberty in Tulamben on the island of Bali and out on Nusa Lembongan , a small island just off the coast. I was overjoyed to be joined by Ed and Jamie all the way from Savannah. Then Heidi and I flew a couple of islands east to catch a liveaboard dive boat called 'Amalia' for a weeklong underwat...

Witnessing the incredible Bay of Fundy Tidal Shift

Image
Bridge at Low Tide Shubenackadie River Bridge High Tide    Having a background in marine biology and understanding the movements of the ocean better than most, I have always been drawn to the place where the biggest tides on Earth occur. That place is called the Bay of Fundy. It is located in between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick provinces of Canada. Here the tidal shift has been recorded at a whopping 50ft difference between high and low in a single day. High Tide Low Tide   Because of this phenomenon there are several places set up for viewing the tidal shift as well as a tidal wave, also called a tidal bore which rolls up the rivers and changes the direction they appear to be flowing. Rafter and Kayakers on the Tidal Bore Mom looking out Adventurous Kayaker heading out to the tidal bore    Adventurous kayakers and rafters on small dinghys line up, awaiting the tidal bore so they can ride the wave. Large standing waves are creat...

Hiking Brier Island, Nova Scotia

Image
The western lighthouse Lighthouse and tide pool   A grumpy lady in Digby asked us what we are going to Brier Island for, because there is nothing to see there. Well we thought we would put that to the test. After our great whale watching experience off the coast of Brier we went hiking along the coast. It turns out Brier Island has a bit more to offer than what our grump traveler friend thought. Wildflowers galore Songbird and it's catch   We hiked between lighthouses guarding the rocky, windswept coast. We had songbirds singing overhead. Beautiful wildflowers and interesting bog plants filled the meadows behind the rocky shoreline. And gulls by the hundreds roosted along the rocks just inland and didn't stop their antics at all as we walked by. It is a peaceful place where you won't see too many other travelers. The sounds are all natural and the wildflowers and salt air ignite your senses. It felt pretty good to prove that lady wrong. Mom lookin...

Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada

High tides at Bay of Fundy Reminds me of this   I do love to explore new places so when the opportunity came up to travel 4,400 miles from Juneau, Alaska to Nova Scotia, Canada to hang out with my world traveling mom for a few days I couldn't resist. I had heard stories of Nova Scotia from my good friend Stalker, but never imagined that is would be this beautiful. It seems like there are picture opportunities around every corner. Plus these maritime islanders happen to be some of the friendliest, and proudest folks around. Wild Lupine   My mom met me at the airport after one flight cancellation left me stranded for a few hours in Vancouver. A shiny new red VW bug was to be our mode of transportation to places like the Bay of Fundy, Brier Island, and Prince Edward Island. Being July the wildflowers were out in force, making everything even more scenic. Digby Backpackers Inn    Our base of operations for these first few days was a hostel in the coa...
