Into the Devil's Pool and Dining with Elephants on the Zambezi

Image
No safety nets, no coned-off areas, just the sheer power of the falls a few feet away. Devil's Pool, Zambia.   Alright, talk about your wild adventures. Today was the last full day on our Grand Africa Safari extravaganza, so we wanted to go out with a bang. A friend of Greg and Sue's had put the idea of experiencing the Devil's Pool into their heads, and I was more than happy to make that happen. The Devil's Pool is a naturally occurring infinity pool formation, right at the edge of the might Victoria Falls. When the water isn't too high, it can be possible to hike, wade, and swim out to this pool of calmer water, and even peek over the side of the falls, down into the gorge below. It sure doesn't sound safe enough to be a thing in the States, but we were willing to try it out and see just how crazy this Devil's Pool really is.

Exploring NW Maui, from Wailuku to Lahaina

Early morning look at Haleakala volcano's South side  Road 'round the West Maui Mtns, NW Maui Plumeria  One of the big adventures not often attempted here on Maui is the drive around the West Maui mountains. The road here can be driven by any type of car, however you need to be a confident driver as some of the turns are little more than one lane and on the precipice of a huge cliff. But like the more popular 'road to Hana' the sights along this drive are incredible. Huge canyons, distant waterfalls, tropical flowers, and ocean vistas try and pull your eyes off the road. One of my favorite scenes, Big Beach  My mom and I tackled this windy road after starting off the morning at the very end of the road, La Perouse Bay . Tucked back in the newest lava flows on Maui the road dead ends into a very beautiful but rugged bay where Admiral La Perouse landed his ship. Beautiful sandy beaches like Big Beach await travelers down in the Makena area with a few se...

Clouds on a Dinner Cruise

With crazy winds comes wild cloud formations and beautiful sunsets out here in Maui. You may have to throw in a couple of rainbows as well. All good reasons to accept the wind even when it is blowing sea smoke off the water which makes driving boats very interesting. Despite the conditions all around Maui today my Aunt and cousins and I decided to go for a sunset dinner cruise out of Lahaina. Luckily we had a small window of calmish water to enjoy the beautiful sunset. We saw some whales from far off and the setting sun really lit up the west Maui mountains. Add good food and good company and you've got yourself a nice end to the day.
