Empty Trails, Fresh Powder, and the Incredible Winter Continues here in Stowe

Image
A cute, Vermont town, with a frozen river running through it, getting snowed on. It has been a winter to remember here in the small mountain town of Stowe, Vermont. We've had over 200 inches of snow this winter up on our ski mountain, Mount Mansfield. But the amazing thing, is that over the months of January and February, the temperatures have remained below freezing, so the snow has accumulated. A couple of inches here, and a couple more there have really started to add up. With the temperatures remaining so low, the snow coverage coats just about everything, giving off the vibe of a winter wonderland. The rivers are mostly frozen and covered in snow, and the cute little towns, with their main streets and tall, steepled churches remain covered with a white blanket as well. Everywhere I look, it is like I'm staring into a painting. I imagine this will all bring a heck of a mud season later, when it does all finally melt, but I am going to enjoy it for all its worth now. Search for Fresh Powder on 'Dai Mar's Trail', Stowe, Vermont

Image
Back on the search for fresh powder in Stowe, Vermont...like this! I just returned to Stowe, Vermont after a very successful four weeks running expedition trips aboard the Safari Explorer in the Hawaiian Islands. It was a harsh adjustment at first. When I stepped out of the airport, my body felt a 90+ degree temperature drop. Instead of 86 degrees outside, it was -6 degrees. Yes, you read that right, 6 degrees below zero. Brrr. But then, it was time to explore what those winter weather conditions brought to the area of Stowe. For the next two days, I would drop off my kids at school, then grab my snowboard and head to Stowe Mountain Resort, to check on the views and shred the mountain. When I left, just after the new year, there was still a lot of the mountain that was closed, waiting for more snow. Now, a month later, pretty much everything is open! I couldn't wait. Not to mention that the snow keeps coming! We've gotten a few inches a night since I've been home. So much...

Opening Day at Stowe Mountain: Time to Snowboard!

Image
Opening day and the stoke is real! They were all saying, 'winter is coming.' But not anymore, because winter is here! Today was opening day at the Stowe Mountain Resort. Skiers and snowboarders lined up early in the morning to get their first ride of the winter. The excitement levels have increased over the last two days because of new snow falling on the mountain. Added to all the man-made snow things were looking pretty good! The beautiful town of Stowe, Vermont. I got to the mountain a little before the first lift opened at 9am. They were still handing out breakfast sandwiches. I think I got the second to last one, and scarfed it down while I waited in the lift line. At the end of last season I was injured with a sprained ankle, so I missed a few days at the mountain, so I was extra hungry to get up there this morning. The sandwich helped hit the spot. I joined the opening celebration with free breakfast sandwiches! The parking lot was packed with folks as eager as me. The...
