Contrast on the Reef, Kaanapali

Harlequin Shrimp lined up White Tip Reef Shark  On this dive we came across big and small favorites and a few surprises as well. My favorite pair of Harlequin Shrimp haven't moved far. Sometimes they stay in the same place for months as these two have. On the other hand a white tip reef shark was something new to this site. At a couple of places in Molokini I have seen white tips stay put for months as well. 'Peek-a-boo'. Moray eel just hiding Red Reef Lobster  Checking the crevices for nudibranchs always offers some secret treasures for an underwater biologist. And it is a great way to get surprised by many kinds of moray eels. They are almost always docile knowing that they are well protected if only their head and mouth are exposed. However sometimes seeing their reflection in my camera can bring out the curiosity in them and they will come in for a closer look. I have had them bump right into my camera before. Wailea:Rare Nudibranch Dive w/Friends

Dana, Ben, Heidi, Sadie, and I all gathered together for a fun scuba diver at Wailea point. It was a beautiful, sunny day and we all felt quite warm in our 5mm wetsuits as we walked from the parking lot down to the beach. I love it when you hit that cold, refreshing water on a really hot day. This turned out to be the perfect temperature and one of the few dives where I haven't felt cold towards the end. The water was clear and blue making it a great place for a dive. Part of the dive was a refresher for Dana and Sadie. Once we saw that they were doing great Heidi and I started concentrating on finding those elusive nudibranchs. Usually Wailea Point is a great place to find sea slugs. Today did not disappoint. On the roof of a cave I found this snow goddess pictured on the right. We did our best not to disturb it because it was in the process of laying eggs.
