First Time to the East Face of Columbia Glacier, Prince William Sound, Alaska

Image
Beautiful blues of the Columbia Glacier. What a day! I have been to the largest tidewater glacier in Prince William Sound, Alaska twice before, but never have I been able to make it up to the massive east face of the glacier. After receding nearly 14 miles over the past forty years, Columbia glacier has split into several calving faces. The smaller west branch is usually easier to access, because of less ice. If we could get within five miles of the east face it was considered a success. However, this day we got to about three and a half miles, and decided today was the day. We loaded up our small skiffs, and took off, weaving our way around massive icebergs. Sea otters and harbor seals looked on curiously as we drove by, getting ever closer to the calving face of the glacier. It seemed like the glacier created a pocket of blue sky, while the rest of Prince William Sound was steeped in low grey clouds. It was a surreal experience. We sat and listened to the ice. It almost seemed ...

Exploring Misty Columbia Glacier in Prince William Sound, Alaska by Expedition Cruise Ship

Cruising in the glacier carved fjords of Alaska's Prince William Sound. It can be such a magical experience pulling up to a glacier by boat in the early morning. We do this weekly here in Prince William Sound on our expedition cruise ship, the Safari Explorer. This morning the Columbia Glacier was reflected in the calm waters of the fjord, and low misty clouds clung to the tops of the ice. Seeing a mist-covered glacier from the deck of an expedition cruise ship is a truly magical experience, one that captures the awe-inspiring beauty and raw power of nature. As the ship glides through the still, icy waters, a dense, ethereal mist begins to envelop the surroundings, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere. The glacier, partially shrouded in mist, emerges like a giant, ghostly apparition, its towering ice cliffs glowing with a soft, otherworldly light. The silence is profound, broken only by the occasional creak and groan of the ice, reminding you of the glacier’s immense and ancie...

Exploring the Incredible Columbia Glacier in Prince William Sound, Alaska

Columbia Glacier, as Good as it Gets. 3 MIN READ 421 WORDS Reflection in the Water. View of the Columbia Glacier. After several days of rain and cold, we scored the perfect weather for our trip up the Columbia fjord to the famous Columbia Glacier. We had blue sky and sunshine, plus mirror-like conditions on the water. The jagged mountains, the glacier itself, and the thousands of icebergs all casts reflections in the water. It was a photographers delight. After breakfast we loaded up our skiffs and worked our way to the face of the glacier, often just taking in the scenery in silence, soaking it all up. Since we had the entire fjord to ourselves, the only noise we would hear was the glacier talking to us in creaks and groans, and thunderous roars. We saw several calvings, creating loud booms when the ice chunks hit the water. Guests heading out in the skiffs from the mother ship. The Columbia Glacier, located in Prince William Sound, Alaska, is one of the most significant and rap...
