We Made it to Tiger Glacier! No more Sea Ice.

Image
Our first look at Tiger Glacier. In the far southwest reaches of Prince William Sound, there is a protected fjord known as Icy Bay. I love to visit here because we always have it all to ourselves, and the scenery is second to none. The wall of the fjord crater up to thousands of feet, waterfalls tumbled down the sheer sides, mountains goats scamper in impossible spots along the cliffs, and a massive glacier, filled with blue ice, slow motions tumbles into the sea at the end. Last week we were blocked from access to the face of the glacier because the surface of the ocean was frozen solid for about a mile. I even got out and walked on it, just to test it. The fact that I didn't fall through, made me think that this ice was here to stay for awhile. So imagine my surprise when we showed up this morning, and got closer, and closer, and closer, until finally, we were at the face of the glacier. The guests awed at the deep blue ice in the glacier, and then, suddenly, a huge chunk calve...

Galapagos Adventure Day 2: Punta Vincente Roca and Espinoza

Image
Skiff Tours, Sea Caves, Beach Landings, and more wildlife than I can shake a stick at? Yes Please! That was the story on our first full day aboard La Pinta here in the Galapagos Islands. We started off our day with a zodiac tour around the Northwest tip of Isabela Island at a place called Punta Vicente Roca. A marine iguana lazily lounges ontop of another in an attempt to warm up in the afternoon sun. The landscape of Isabela Island here is stunning. The volcano geology is exposed thanks to thousands of years of erosion due to wind, waves, and rain. As we approached the cliffs closer we realized that sea birds and marine iguanas dotted the cliffs. Just like the animals on Seymour North Island yesterday, they allowed us to approach very closely. All of these photos were taken with my iPhone. It was the closest I had ever gotten to a brown noddy, a beautiful little sea bird that nest in rocky cliffs. Check out the photo below! Farther along the cliffs we came across a massive sea c...

2020: A Year in Review

Image
2020 will go down in infamy as the year of the pandemic of Covid 19. I have to say that I was luckier than most. Besides the most important of those close to me staying healthy and safe, I spent time in Maui, Antarctica, sailing across the South Atlantic, a cruise to nowhere, and an unprecedented time focusing on family and what is really important. I was able to safely spend time with my family, including traveling with the family to Savannah to get some time with my side of the family. I was home for everyone's birthday, including mine...which is quite rare. The Christmas holiday season in Vermont was beautiful and it was my first time getting to see the kids really enjoy and understand Christmas. And then to cap off this wild and crazy year, Heidi and I got engaged on Christmas night.  Writing about the year is an annual tradition for me on this blog so lets look back at this year in review.  I rang in the new years with a wild party onboard an ultra luxury expedition...
