Hiking High Above Cordova, Alaska

Image
High above the little town of Cordova, 1000+ ft up on tripod hill. Eyak lake spreads out below, and the beginning of the Copper River Delta stretches out to the far horizon. Heading into the harbor of the small Alaskan fishing town of Cordova. First Street, Cordova. Little shops and coffee spots, a brewery, grocery store, and a bank all line First Street. Its a pretty easy town to explore in a few hours, but you could explore the surroundings for days. A few guests of mine stopped in and tried some of the local micro-brews. They all gave thumbs up. This building is a one-stop-shop for all your needs. We got a historical town tour from Ashley, the director of the Cordova Museum. One of the oldest buildings on First Street is the Alaskan Hotel. The Bar is down below. And the sign, which fell off during the Good Friday Earthquake of 1964, was put back upside down and remained that way ever since. I liked some of the old signs, like this one, still up and about as you walk around Cor...

Kayaking to Chenega Glaier, Prince William Sound

Image
All this ice is not going to be easy to get through, but we've gotta get closer to the glacier, so here we go! Stuck in the ice, and loving it, at Chenega Glacier. Chenega Glacier is located in Nassau Fjord, towards the southwest corner of Prince William Sound in Alaska. The closest port is Whittier, but we arrived from Seward after driving through the night. Because of its remote location, we don't usually see any other boats while we are here. Today was the same, as we had the whole fjord to ourselves. We also had perfect kayaking conditions, with not a drop of wind. We even had sun shining down, which made up for the otherwise frigid temperature outside. Today I led a guided kayak, from the back deck of the Safari Explorer towards the glacier face. Along the way we stopped for beautiful harlequin ducks, waterfalls, and mountains goats. But the real draw was a massive tidewater glacier. Chenega Glacier is one of the most active glaciers we go to here in Prince William Sound...

Getting the UnCruise Alaska season started in Seward, AK

Image
Two Dall's porpoises escort the Safari Explorer to the beautiful Alaskan town of Seward. A few days ago I flew into Anchorage and drove down to meet my expedition cruise ship near Seward, Alaska. We spent a few days in the JAG shipyard, getting the boat all ready for our big Alaska season. We are running seven day trips into Prince William Sound, and ten day trips past Kodiak and Katmai, all the way to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands. Both of these trips will be starting in the picturesque coastal town of Seward, Alaska. After a few days we cast off our lines and left the shipyard to head over to Seward harbor. On our way we had a pod of Dall's porpoise come and bowride. The town of Seward is nestled in between the bottom of snow covered mountains and the calm seas of Resurrection Bay. I spent a couple days docked here, and tried to get off the boat to explore the town and its surroundings. There are some fun trails, including the Two Lakes Trail, that are easily accessi...
