The Great Oceana Trip: Beginning

A ten hour flight from Honolulu landed me for the first time ever on the continent of Australia. Just looking around at the Sydney airport you might not realize it's another country. Krispy Kreme doughnut stands, fast food stalls, and coffee shops dot the lanes. But I knew I was far, far from home. Sydney wasn't my final destination, I waited for a flight to Brisbane and the Gold Coast to start an epic surf adventure trip with Myles and Jack through some of Oz's best waves and reefs, onto Indo's warm barrelling waves, all through New Zealand's South Island, and ending up in Fiji. Five weeks of sliding on waves, expanding our palettes, and raising the bar for adventure. We've got camera gear and GoPros to capture the action so look for a lot more posts to come.
I had a morning to walk around and check out the town of Brisbane. It was much bigger than I expected. It was a quiet Sunday morning so I headed towards the beaches which are backed by miles and miles of wetlands. It reminded me a lot of the barrier islands of Georgia.

Surfing in Coolum
Jack has been living here on the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane for about five months so he was our scout for secret surf spots along the coast. He had a good spot called Coolum Beach picked out for us. So after meeting up we headed straight there and caught some really fun beach break surf. The water was clear, the waves plentiful, the beach endless, and the crowd....well it was just us three. Not a bad way to start the trip. After wearing ourselves out in the waves we drove on to our spot for the night in a little beach town called Noosa Heads. Lots of shops and restaurants lined the beach which had beautiful shaped waves curving into the bay. To get pumped up we fell asleep to Chasing Mavericks playing in the background, all hoping for waves in the morning and the knowledge that 5am will not come soon enough.
