Arriving in Nairobi

Norfolk Hotel style
After traveling half way around the world the Dillon clan arrived in Nairobi, Kenya. John, Ale, and Maggie flew in around dinner time so I whisked them from the airport to one of the oldest buildings in the city center, the historic Norfolk hotel, which has been in business since 1905. When you consider Kenya wasn't even a country until 1963 when it finally shed its colonial rulers, you can understand the atmosphere that comes with such a place. It has been the retreat of Lords and colonial governors to modern day celebrities and royals. And now it is where we are starting our East Africa adventure.

Reunited in Africa
Colonial feel of the Nofolk
With three of the thirteen tucked into their beds it was time for the rest of group to arrive. Everyone looked good getting off the plane, especially for 3am, and I told everyone to stay strong and meet at breakfast at 7:30am...in about four hours. It was so fun seeing everyone reunited the next morning, and I could only imagine how it must feel to meet up with family in such an exotic place, so far from home.

Dillons ready for Safari
Now fueled up with local Kenyan coffee, we jumped into our minibus for a quick ride to Nairobi's small domestic Wilson airport. Luckily it was Sunday morning and Christmas Eve so the city roads were as emtpy as they will ever be. We avoided the infamous Nairobi traffic that I was stuck in for hours only a day ago, and made it to our two 12 passenger planes for a scenic flight across Kenya to the Northernmost spot on our itinerary.

We crossed the equator in flight, and flew by the beautiful lake Naivasha and Mt. Kenya, Kenya's tallest mountain at over 17,000ft. Everyone's eyes got a little wide as we came in steeply for our landing on a rough looking dirt strip. A couple of giraffes crossed the air strip a little farther down and some local Samburu kids greeted us as we walked to our waiting safari vehicles. Now with the big plane rides and city noise behind us we enter the wild bush of Africa!
