Frogfish Spotting in Maui

Frogfish on the Coral Reef in Maui

Ever since Heidi and I found out about the existence of frogfish when we first moved to Maui they have been one of our favorite fish to search for on our scuba dives. But it is not easy to find them as they are one of the best camouflagers on the reef.

The last thing fish see
Frogfish are in the same family as deep sea angler fish. They sit motionless on the reef, waiting for unsuspecting fish to swim by. Then they swallow them whole in a movement which is almost lost in the blink of an eye. On our first two days diving here on Maui we were able to find three different frogfish. Two at the old wreckage of Mala pier, and one at white rock.

Heidi and her big find....see it?
You can see how excited Heidi is here, posing with one of her favorite finds. These beautiful Commerson's frogfish come in a variety of colors. There are many other species of frogfish out there as well. We have seen many species around the world on our dive exploration and I have compiled the best photographs of them in this album. Feel free to peruse and be amazed at what nature can come up with.
