Surfing Coolangata to Snapper Rocks, Australia

After a few extra minutes of sleep we drove a mile down the beach to check out the famous Noosa breaks. It is a beautiful area, with jungle coming right down to the cliff, and waves peeling off the point. The water looks inviting the waves needed another two feet to be rideable so we jumped back in the car heading back towards Coolum. We stopped at a beach break called Sunshine Beach and once again had it all to ourselves until the end. Again, fun, peaky waves were had by all. Myles and I were GoPro filming the session so hopefully fun shots from that will follow soon. We had just enough time afterwards to grab a breakfast burrito from Noosa and check out of our place by 10 am. A long drive south to Coolangata was next.

As soon as we made it back to the car the sun disappeared and the sky darkened. As we continued our way south past Brisbane the storms came with a furry. According to the radio we just missed the hail, but we got plenty of rain and wind. I kept thinking about koalas as the trees were almost blowing over. They better be holding on tight. The stormed caused some nasty traffic but finally abated as we closed in on our next destination, Coolangata. This area is home to two of Australia's most famous waves, Kirra and Snapper Rocks. There wasn't a huge swell but we saw some people surfing at Snappers so we hustled down and jumped in. The storm was still creating lightning far offshore and rainbows as well. Brisbane was standing tall far down the coast. There is something very satisfying about surfing a new place. We were treated to one of the best sunsets as we surfed. So far the trip is exceeding all of our expectations.

We had dinner tonight at the Coolangata Surf Club. Aparantly each beach has its own club and clubhouse. You can be a member and get certain benefits, they are restaurants, bars, and some form of gambling that hasn't been explained to me yet. It kinda reminds me of the neighborhood swim teams that I grew up with. It goes to show how much the surf culture is reverred over here compared with America where it is still such a counter culture idea, like snowboarding or skateboarding. Here in Australia when a kid wants to grow up to be the world number one surfer, the parents probably want that even more.
