The Cape Wine Route

Going to Cape Town in South Africa is like a different world once you have traveled the rest of Africa. I call it little Europe. Not only is the city itself beautiful but it comes with the perfect weather for grape growing and wine making. South Africa wine is hitting the international scene in a big way. So my mom and I decided to take a trip through the wine region and do our own taste testing to check it out.
After couchsurfing with a wonderful couple, Marlise and Chris, we headed to the Stellenbosh wine region. We stopped at 3 wineries for cellar tours and wine tasting. The real treat was a stop at the Van Ryn brandy factory. The Capetonions are big brandy fans and we found out why. It was wine to the next level, very smooth, potent, and would go great with some chocolate and coffee. We could tell why they have won so many awards.
The region itself is gorgeous. Huge rocky mountains surround the lush valleys and vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see. For 6 bucks you can go to 4 wineries complete with tours and tastings. Not a bad way to spend a day.
